Jessica + John

March 19, 2016

Knoxville, Tennessee   | Ridgeview Baptist Church

We are thrilled to see our recent couple Jessica and John featured on Budget Savvy Bride! We got to shoot their incredible day, and we are excited to help share their story! We invite you to check out some of their big moments below. We couldn’t help but share Jessica’s quote about her most memorable moment of the day.

We chose to not do a reveal prior to the ceremony, only praying together with him on one side of a wall and me around the corner… So there was no peeking prior to the ceremony! Walking down the aisle and seeing this beautiful chapel and all our friends and family, then reaching a point where we each other for the first time. The look and smile on John’s face was amazing!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY.

I’m a thirty-something married mom of two energetic girls.  We jokingly state that I was “born into” a pile of flowers; let me explain…  My mother began working in a flower shop in her late teens and opened her first shop in her early twenties.  I grew up in “the shop”; learning design, technique, and knowing I could skip school every Valentine’s Day until graduation!  I enjoyed creating beauty through flowers; I continue to use that motivation in the work I do today.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO WEDDING FLORALS?

Wedding work was always a part of mom’s shop. The key to wedding work now is having an acute awareness of current trends and executing professional technique to ensure the bride receives the florals she’s dreamed of!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A FLORIST?

Hands down….it’s the creative freedom I have!  I love creating unique arrangements for each of our clients

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER AND / OR STYLE (MODERN, CLASSIC, NATURAL, GLAM) AND WHY?

Though I’m very much a perfectionist, I lean toward the natural style of design.  The picturesque look of a fresh bouquet of “garden” flowers-hydrangeas, peonies, limonium that are loosely arranged is my favorite style.  However, in the spring, nothing beats a vase full of tulips.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED, AND WOULD PASS ALONG TO OTHER NEW WEDDING FLORISTS JUST GETTING STARTED?

Listen to your bride!  Encourage her to bring pictures, share her Pinterest board, have swatches of her color palette; you want to ensure you have a crystal clear understanding of exactly what flowers/greens/materials will be used.

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO COUPLES WHO ARE ORDERING THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS?

Come prepared with a budget and be open to suggestions/substitutions.  Often the perception of cost comes as a “sticker” shock.  Questions such as, “Roses at the grocery are much cheaper, why am I paying more here?”  The response to that is quality of flowers, care and handling of those flowers, and the artistic, creative touch we, as floral professionals, use to make your wedding day florals the most talked about for years to come.

ARE THERE ANY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS YOU FEEL BRIDES SHOULD ASK THEIR FLORISTS?

I’ve found that most brides assume the florist will deliver to ceremony site, set florals in place, pin on boutonnieres, etc. at no additional cost.   That’s not the case.  Most florists charge additional fees (us included) for delivery/set up.  There are options available for every budget so PLEASE ensure you have a clear understanding of expectation.

Beautiful work Margo, thanks for sharing!

This was one of my first times trying to photograph the milky way and adding subjects in the shot as well. Although there has been some retouching done to these images the girls and the sky were captured at the same time in the same frame and not photoshopped together. I love the technical side of photography and it was nice to get some friends together and be able to go play and practice new methods. For these images I set my camera settings to capture the sky which meant that the shutter had to be open for 15-20 seconds per image then added some off camera lights to light up the girls. One issue we ran into was that the girls had to hold still for the full 15-20 second while the image was being taken or they would leave a shadow over part of the sky. The second problem was that since we had to do this late at night there was dew and it was hard to keep all of our equipment especially our lenses dry. All in all it was a great time and well worth it to learn some new techniques.

Engagement Session Knoxville Wedding PhotographyBack in January one of the professional groups I am a member of, Professional Photographers of East Tennessee, had a booth at the bridal and beyond wedding show to help educate brides on what to look for  in a professional photographer and I volunteered to help man the booth. We did a drawing each hour for a free engagement session and Alex and Michael were one of the winning couples.

I met with them in February to get to know each other and plan their shoot. They are a super nice couple and I was happy that I was going to have the chance to work with them. We decide that the best location to get everything they were wanting would be downtown Knoxville. We chose to wait until the first of May to do their session that way we could work in a little of the spring/summer look along with the urban theme. We started our shoot in graffiti alley and worked our way around Knoxville finally ending the session with the Knoxville sunsphere shot above. They were such a fun couple to work with and you can tell they really love each other.
